Whilst 71% of the earth’s surface is water, only 1% is actually drinkable. According to a 2008 WHO report, about 885 million people, that’s 1/8th of the world’s population, have no access to safe drinking water and about 3.6 million people die each year from drinking water that’s unsafe.

In response to this, World Water Day hopes to highlight these issues and redress the balance, stressing the importance of fresh water and the sustainable management of freshwater resources, by using a combination of awareness campaigns, fundraising events, lobbying and theatre performances.
